Question

Can I buy car insurance without owning a car?

I don't own a car but I rent vehicles often and I am sick of paying a lot for rental insurance. Is it possible to buy auto insurance without owning a car and is it any cheaper than the rental coverage??

Yes — you can purchase auto insurance when you don't own a car. This is referred to as a non-owners policy. As far as using non-owners coverage for the purpose of renting a vehicle, this probably isn't what you are looking for. Non-owners insurance will provide liability coverage as well as any additional state-required coverage, but does not cover any damage caused to the vehicle you are driving. This is an issue when you rent a car since the rental company's main concern is their vehicle being damage while it is rented. An alternative to purchasing rental insurance through the rental agency would be to get coverage through your credit card company. This might make more financial sense if you are renting vehicles on a regular basis. Best of luck!
