Question

Can my mom lower or cancel her insurance if she no longer plans to drive?

My mom has recently experienced some health issues and does not plan to drive for an extended period of time. It's even possible that she may never drive her car again. Can she reduce her car insurance coverage or cancel it altogether until she plans on driving again?

Unless there is a loan on the vehicle and the bank is requiring that she have physical damage coverage, she can carry the state minimum for the purpose of keeping the car legal. If she wants to completely cancel her policy then she would need to turn in the vehicle's registration tag to the state. If she cancels her policy and returns the registration, she will need to re-register the car and insure it before she is able to legally drive it again. She can always shop around if she is needing a less expensive policy.
