Question

Should I add my child to my policy or get them their own?

Our son just got his license and I know it's going to be ridiculously expensive to put him on my policy. Wouldn't it be even more expensive on his own or would it be cheaper to add him to mine? In the majority of instances, it is less expensive to add your child to your existing policy than getting separate coverage. This is mainly due to the fact that your child will not qualify for as many discounts on their own as they will by being added to your policy. There are other factors that could lead to the opposite being the case especially if you have very high coverage limits or expensive vehicles on your policy that your child will not be driving. Your best bet is to price the coverage with your existing company first and use that rate as a guideline when you shop with different companies to get a more accurate picture as to which company will offer the lowest rate.
