Question

Does a criminal record affect your insurance?

I want to buy a car but I’m afraid I won’t be able to insure it because I have a felony on my record. I wasn’t driving or even in a vehicle when I was arrested. Does that matter?

A non-driving felony conviction most likely won’t affect your rate, but it could make you ineligible for a policy with certain companies. Since you are already aware of the incident, you will want to disclose this when you call a company for a quote so they can let you know up front if that will create an issue. Luckily, there are hundreds of companies that will insure you regardless of felony convictions so don’t get discouraged if you are turned down. Your best bet is to shop for a new policy first before actually buying a car so there aren’t any surprises when you’re ready to set up your insurance. Best of luck!
