Question

How much do car insurance rates go up after a DUI?

My friend just got charged with a DUI and has to pay thousands of dollars in fines. In addition to that his vehicle was impounded and is racking up fees every day that it stays in the lot. With all these fees and court costs he won't be able to afford his insurance if his rate goes up. Is there anything he can do to keep his rate the same?

Unfortunately there is no way to provide an accurate number or percentage due to the fact that there are so many variables when pricing insurance. One thing to keep in mind is that if he is already insured then the chance of his insurance company finding out about the violation is slim to none. Most companies will not re-run driving reports after you are a customer due to the cost involved so there is a good chance that he won't see any change with his existing carrier. If he chooses to switch to a new company then the DUI is likely to show up on his report and thus increase his rate.
