Question
How soon after switching home insurance policies can you make a claim?
I’m looking into getting a new homeowners policy, but I'm worried that it will be hard to file a claim if something goes wrong shortly after my policy takes effect.
Answer
Hopefully, you will not need to file a claim, but insurance will follow the effective date. If your policy takes effect January 1st, 2020, then that is the first date that a claim would be honored. There is no grace period on a new policy unless otherwise stated. However, keep in mind that most insurance companies are allowed to cancel your policy within the first 30-60 days. As such, it's always wise to be prudent with your claims. Good luck and don't forget that The Zebra can help you compare homeowners rates in your area.
