Question

If I'm a new driver in the US, how will that impact my rate?

I'm a new driver in the US but have 5 years of driving experience outside of the US, will that help to lower my rate? I am planning to buy a new car this week so I'm searching around for insurance.

The length of driving experience that insurance companies use to determine your rate is based on US driving. Your previous experience may slightly improve your rate, but the length of time you have been licensed in the US will matter the most. The reason for this is because your driving history from outside of the US is not available to any of the insurance companies with which you will be insuring your vehicle. I would recommend shopping for a new insurance policy before you purchase a vehicle so you aren't surprised by the rate.
