Question

My insurance went up because the state changed it’s legislation?

I live in Las Vegas and have GEICO insurane. I am coming up on my 6 month renewal. Without any warning, they raised my coverage from the 15/30/10 to 25/50/20. I called GEICO and asked why? They said that Nevada had raised its requirements on coverage. I went to Nevada’s website; http://doi.nv.gov/Consumers/Automobile-Insurance/ where it says 15/30/10 was the minimum requirement. I have not filed a claim or have had an accident while insured with GEICO. My monthly rates have gone from $152 to $205. Is this legal to do? Thank you.

It looks like the state’s website has not been updated because GEICO is correct, the state of Nevada did raise their state minimum from 15/30/10 to 25/50/20. Because insurance companies are at the mercy of state regulation, it would be illegal for them not to comply. If you are interested in finding cheaper insurance, you can compare rates here.
