How does insurance work if my vehicle is totaled before my renewal?

My ins renews May 20 and I got rear-ended this week. If the other person’s ins totals it out, would I still be able to drive it until 5/20? How does this work?

When a car is considered totaled, the insurance company takes possession of the vehicle. You can offer to buy the vehicle back or choose to not accept the payment for the vehicle. If you choose either of those options, the vehicle will have a salvaged title. This means many companies will not offer “full coverage” because the structural integrity of the vehicle is compromised. Good luck and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
Now, you have some time before your next renewal. I would figure out what you’re going to do with your current vehicle. If you’re going to buy another, add it to your policy. Bear in mind, this will change your current premium. If you total the vehicle and remove it from you policy, that will effectively cancel the only if you do not have another vehicle insured. Keep this in mind. My best recommendation is to call an insurance agent at your company and talk about your options.
