I live with mom and we have an umbrella policy and a car insurance policy. I want to switch companies but mom says I can't.
My mom says I can't switch car insurance companies because I can't buy my own umbrella insurance and she's afraid to get sued in an accident. Is this true?
When it comes to having an umbrella policy, anyone is able to purchase one. However, there are certain qualifications you are going to need in order to purchase one. Your auto insurance minimums typically need to be 250/500 or higher on your bodily injury, as well as on your uninsured/underinsured. Depending on your age and driver history, you may have to go through underwriter approval. Purchasing an umbrella policy is worth it whenever you have any assets. If you don't have any it's not necessary, but you can never have too much coverage in the event of an accident, so we always recommend having one.
