Question

How long can you wait to file an auto insurance claim?

I switched insurance providers, but before i got to make the first payment my car was broken into and some property was stolen. I filed a police report immediately after and the damages from the incident were recorded and photographed. Can I still file a claim?

Each state has varying statutes on how long you have after damage occurs to file a claim. In Maryland, you actually have up to 3 years to file a property damage claim, although I would not recommend waiting that long as it can be difficult for your insurance company to properly assess the damage. You would have to file a claim with the company who insured your vehicle at the time of the theft, however, and if you were in between policies you may not be covered at all. In addition, the personal property that was stolen from the vehicle would likely have to be claimed under a homeowners or renters insurance policy since auto policies do not normally cover personal items.
