My mother bought out her car lease and put me as the co-owner. She passed away the day after the transaction. Can I add it to my policy?

I am listed on the bill of sale as co-owner with my mother. She had her own insurance on the vehicle, and I now want to add it to my insurer. Am I able to add it now? Is it still considered insured by her policy? Thank you.

My condolences. Yes, you can and should add the car to your policy. Your mother’s policy needs to be canceled as soon as possible. Here is a reference on how to handle a car insurance policy after someone passes. Your mother’s insurer may require documentation proving your status as the executor of the estate.

Good luck, and if you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
