Question

If I add my mother to my car insurance, do I have to add her spouse also?

I had to use my mother's credit card to pay for rental car insurance. The car insurance company told me I needed to add her to my insurance to use her card. Does this mean I also need to add my father?

Companies can have different rules about who needs to be listed on the policy. Most commonly, anyone who lives in your household (that is of driving age), anyone that will drive the vehicle regularly, and any spouses of listed drivers will need to be added to the policy. If neither apply to your parents, some companies also require the person making the payment to be listed as well. So, with your mom making the payment and her being married, your dad needs to be listed on the policy. With that being said, you should be able to exclude them as drivers if they will not be driving the car. Excluding a person from the policy means they will not be covered to drive the car but their driving history will also not affect your rates.
