Question
Do I need to call my insurance company after an accident if a police report has been written?
I just recently hit a tree a police report was written. The police didn't say anything about reporting to the insurance. What would be the most prudent course of action?
Answer
If you want to get your vehicle fixed and your policy includes collision coverage, then yes, you will want to notify your insurance company so they can start the claims process since a police report will not start that process. If your policy does not include collision then there is no reason to contact them based on this information. Had you hit another vehicle rather than the tree, regardless of your coverage, you would probably want to contact your company so the claims process could begin for the other driver's vehicle. I hope this helps and best of luck!
