My roommate left a pot on the stove too long and set off the fire alarm. The sprinklers turned on and ruined everything in the apartment, including my furniture and clothes. What can I do?

If you do not have renters insurance, unfortunately, there isn't much you can do. Renters insurance would have protected your personal property. Although purchasing renters insurance will not cover your current loss. As you can see, it is well worth it and typically very affordable. You never know what can happen and that is the purpose of insurance: to help you avoid financial hardships when unexpected events occur. As far as the damage to the your home, it sounds like you are renting. If you are renting, the owner of the property is responsible to repair the damages.
