Question

In the past five years, we have had four claims. I recently had an accident in my garage where I hit my own car. Should I file a claim?

Currently, I am paying around $850/year for each of my two cars for full coverage. This past weekend I had an accident in my garage where I hit my other car that caused damage to both cars. I took one car to an auto body shop and the estimate is $6,000. The other car has about $2,000 worth of damage.

The question is to file a claim or not to file a claim. I’d file a claim but my biggest fear is being dropped or put into the high-risk category and the financial impact, considering my claims history.

Given your claims history, I would pay for the damages to both vehicles out-of-pocket. You are correct that having any more claims added will likely make it very difficult to find coverage — not to mention when you do, it's going to cost even more than your current bills. In the long term, it would make the most financial sense to handle this without insurance.
