Question

What are the pros and cons of using uninsured motorist vs comprehensive insurance?

I was involved in a hit and run. Off duty officer got license plate of driver, but it appears he may not have insurance. Comprehensive insurance has no deductible but uninsured motorist has $1000 deductible. Other than the obvious deductible what are the pros and cons of uninsured motorist insurance?

You don't have an option to use your comprehensive insurance here, unfortunately. Comprehensive covers damages resulting from things that happen other than collision. So, damage from animals, theft, of vandalism. I would contact your insurance company and see if they can reimburse you for the deductible for the uninsured motorist coverage from the other driver. The way these coverages are similar, however, is the small (if any) impact they tend to have on your car insurance rate.
