Car Insurance Costs

Do I have to be added to my dad's policy?

You really should just be added to his policy. It is typically cheaper than having your own policy plus if your dad drives the car, he would need to be listed on your policy.

Can you insure a vehicle with multiple drivers on the same policy?

Most insurance companies allow up to four drivers on a single policy. Some companies may even allow a larger number of drivers than that, but four is fairly standard.

Coverage & Claims

If I file a claim where my friend wrecked my dad's car, will her insurance rate go up?

Technically speaking, filing a claim would not result in a "point" on your friend's license because insurance companies do not issue "points" to the DMV. Points are the result of tickets and accidents where a police officer was called to the crash scene or wrote a citation.

Can our insurance company completely drop us and all of our vehicles?

An insurance policy is intended to cover vehicles kept at the address where the policy is written. Insuring vehicles under the same policy that are regularly kept at different addresses is considered insurance fraud and will likely result in the cancellation of the policy altogether.

If I'm buying a car but don't have a license, can my dad insure it for me in his name?

Louisiana law requires that the owner of the vehicle also insure it in their name. If you are the titled owner of the vehicle then you will also need to register and insure it under your name.

Can I insure a vehicle my dad left to me in his will if the title and registration still have not been transferred to my name?

If the vehicle is your only mode of transportation then you should be able to insure it since you have an "insurable interest" in the vehicle. However, if you are involved in an accident where you are considered at fault then your father's estate could be held liable for the damage you caused.

Can I file a claim if the damage happened over a month ago?

As long as you have collision coverage on your policy then the fact that it's been more than a month should not matter. I would recommend contacting your insurance company's claims department to start the process.
