It’s my first time getting my own insurance policy after being covered under my parents’. What do I do?

If you were listed as a driver under your parents’ policy, you would be considered covered by insurance for however long you were on their policy. Be sure to shop around for your new policy before your parents remove you from theirs to avoid a lapse in coverage.

My insurance company sent me a non-renewal notice. Will this affect my premiums going forward?

If they are non-renewing for an unsigned app, you should be able to contact them and get that resolved. If you don't want to stay with them, I would still finish the term and move on to a different insurer.

Can a lender dictate what my deductible is?

Unfortunately, the terms of your loan can dictate what your coverage deductibles must be. Your lienholder may not necessarily notice right away if you change your deductible, but if they catch on they will add force-placed insurance, also known as collateral protection insurance, as a part of your monthly payments.

Can an insurance company recant liability and ask for a refund one month after paying me for damages to my vehicle?

I have not heard of a claim decision being reversed and asking for the claims payout money back. They should be providing you with evidence of why they are refusing to pay the claim — if you haven't asked for this already, you should demand it.

Can I switch companies if my rates go up after an accident?

You can shop around for lower rates elsewhere as you please. But keep in mind that the accident will still be on your record for all insurers to see and rate you on — namely, it will show up on your CLUE report, which all insurance companies use to access your claims history.

Why did my insurance company automatically add my daughter to my policy when she has her own insurance?

If your daughter lives with you and you two share an address, your insurance company is probably assuming that she may sometimes drive your vehicle, at which point she would need to be a named driver on your policy. If she has her own car — and doesn't drive yours — it could be possible for you to have her excluded from your policy.

Can I get my premium for car insurance when I never got the car?

Since the policy was active from August 31 through September 22, your son will be responsible to pay the premium on the policy. Every company has different rules and guidelines so there may be a fee for canceling the policy before the term is over.

DUI ticket issued vs convicted on insurance application

It depends how it is marked on his MVR. If it is still an open case and no conviction has been issued you can answer no because during the reporting process it will not show.

Can I file a claim with my insurance company if I've already paid for repairs to my vehicle?

Even if you have paid for the repairs on your vehicle, your insurance company should cover the damage you caused to the other driver if your policy was active at the time of the crash. I would recommend not paying the other party anything until you've contacted your company to start the claims process.
