Handling a claim with a leased car

Because you're the not-at-fault driver, you would be filling a claim through the other driver's insurance policy. I definitely would repair the damage before you contact your lease, as the damage is probably a violation of your lease agreement.

How do I prove my car was stolen?

Your proof of a stolen vehicle is the police report. You will need to call the police, if you haven't already, and report the vehicle as stolen.

Can I insure my friend's car that I borrow?

As your friend already has a policy for the vehicle, you do not need to get another policy. You can have your friend add you to his policy as a covered driver.

Coverage & Claims

If my son intentionally punched his leased car when he was upset, can I file a claim?

Outside of a vandalism claim, auto insurance policies do not cover intentional damage caused to a vehicle. If you are actually the owner of the car then you may be able to claim that your son vandalized it, but the decision to provide coverage for the damage will ultimately be up to your insurance company and repairs already made to the vehicle may or may not be reimbursed.

If I have insurance with State Farm in Pennsylvania and will be leasing a car through Uber Xchange, will I be able to keep my policy?

As of March 20, 2017, State Farm began offering a coverage endorsement for TNC drivers in Pennsylvania. This means that you should be able to maintain your existing policy once you start driving for Uber.

If I paid to have a window replaced on my car, can I submit the receipt to my insurance company for reimbursement?

Since you are in California, glass claims should not impact your rate. You will want to make sure your policy includes comprehensive coverage (which it should since you are leasing the vehicle).

If I'm involved in an accident driving my grandmother's car, will the damage be covered?

Luckily, most insurance policies allow for permissive use drivers, so the damage you caused should be covered under your grandmother's policy as long as you aren't a full-time driver. Unfortunately, your grandmother's insurance rate is likely to increase after the claim since it will be considered an At Fault accident.

Driving History

Is there any way to keep a claim off of my friend's record?

You could always claim the accident as if you were driving but I highly recommend that you avoid lying to your insurance company. If you file a claim, they are going to want to know what happened so there won't be any way to avoid involving your friend other than being dishonest.

Is it possible to insure three vehicles with two different companies?

You should be able to find a company that would only insure the other vehicle, if that's what you want to do. However, since there is a base cost associated with each policy it's normally recommended that you combine all of your vehicles on one policy since it's usually cheaper.
