Do I need insurance to transport a used car to the shop?

You do not need to insure the vehicle while it's in transit — especially since it's not yet registered. You'll need insurance once the vehicle is repaired and ready to be driven. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Do I need to report a fix-it ticket when applying for new auto insurance?

As long as your license wasn't suspended as a result — or other violations that affect your driving record — you do not have to report fix-it tickets to your insurance company. Insurers typically will only rate against moving violations that show up on your motor vehicle record (MVR). If you're looking for new auto insurance, you can start comparing quotes instantly here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

If I buy a car right before I move states, do I have to get an insurance policy in the state I bought it?

If you will be registering and living in South Dakota, then you will want to get an insurance policy for the address where you'll be living in that state. Insurance needs to be in the state that the vehicle is registered in.

Eligibility

Will we have trouble registering a car that was declared a total loss?

Unfortunately, I won't be able to tell you about the registration. You will need to contact the DMV for that information.

Do I need to register or insure my car in Washington if I have insurance that covers me from Canada while working?

You will need to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles for the state of Washington for information on registration. If you are required to register your car in Washington, then you would likely need a Washington insurance policy with your Seattle address.

Can I drive a truck I'm buying across state lines, without plates, to get it home?

I would call up your local DMV or appropriate state department and ask them what to do. Most states allow you to pay a small fee and show an out of state status and they will issue you a temporary paper plate for the vehicle to be relocated.

RV Insurance

Where can I get short term insurance for an RV?

Whether you're insuring your car or RV, temporary insurance is not really an option — most policies are for 6-12 months. You can typically cancel at any time but be aware of any fees for canceling early.

I have a car in my name but my sister drives it. What do we do about insurance?

If your sister is the policyholder, you will have to have her call her insurance company to access the policy information. Since the car is registered in your name, the insurance either needs to be in your name or you need to be listed on her policy as an additional interest.

Can I get insurance in my name for my girlfriend and her car?

You can get insurance in your name but your girlfriend will need to be listed on the policy since the car is in her name and she will be driving the vehicle. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Eligibility

Can I register my car in someone else's name?

The car can only be registered by the owner. If you sign the title over to someone else, they will own the car and can register the car in their name.

My friend is giving me a car as a gift. What do I need to do to get it transferred in my name?

You need to have the title transferred to you and register it in your name. Here is some information related to that — it will all be done via the TX DMV.
