Why does my dog's breed matter to my insurance company?

Typically, the liability portion of your renters and home policies apply to yours pets in the event they bite someone. Fair or not, insurance companies use breed-specific information to predict if they'll be liable for a bite claim.

If I use my parents' house as my permanent address but live in an apartment, can I get renters insurance?

You would need to use the address of the apartment you are planning on renting. In the event of a claim, let's say a fire, your renters insurance provider will notice that the address listed on your claim doesn't match your policy paperwork.

Is there such thing as 'too much renters insurance'?

If maintaining a specific limit of liability on a renters insurance policy is required by your property manager as part of your lease then there probably isn't any way around it. Do I have to file a claim with my renters insurance company if my apartment was flooded by an upstairs neighbor?

For the purpose of getting your belongings replaced as quickly as possible, I would definitely recommend contacting your renters insurance provider immediately. While your neighbor will likely be considered liable for the water leak, your insurance company should be able to act quickly to replace your items and even provide a temporary place to stay while your apartment is being repaired.

Should my roommate and I get separate renters insurance policies?

Renters insurance is generally inexpensive, but splitting the bill may save a few dollars. Consider, however, that you will also be splitting the amount of coverage on the policy, so your personal items will both be covered at half the listed amount.
