Question
If my teenager rear ended another car but we aren't filing a claim, will my insurance rate go up?
My daughter hit a car at a red light. The vehicle is worth less than a $1,000, but we are more than willing to pay the other driver for their damage. If we don't file a claim with our insurance company, will our rates still increase?
Answer
The tricky part about this situation is the police report. Since your current insurance company is unlikely to re-run your driving records after you become a customer, avoiding a claim should keep the rate with your current company from increasing. However, if you decide to switch to a new insurance provider within the next 3 years, the new company will then run a driving report and the accident will likely show up on the MVR (motor vehicle report). If you do experience a rate increase you can always shop around!
