Question

What should I do after a minor accident?

While driving down a dark street last night I was involved in an accident where I hit someone's car door that had just opened. The damage to my new vehicle is minimal, but the 2002 Hyundai Elantra's door that I hit was pushed forward and into a jammed position. The driver of that vehicle was able to push the door closed enough so she could drive home. Today we are wondering how to proceed.

It really depends on what the repair cost will be. If the other driver gets a few repair estimates, you should have a better understanding of whether it's worth paying for the damage yourself or filing a claim. If the repair is too much to pay out of pocket then you'll need to contact your insurance provider to start the claims process. Our State of Insurance report shows that an at-fault accident in California has an average impact of about $900 per year in additional premium so you will want to consider that before making a decision.
