Question

Who gets the settlement check if I don't own the insured car?

My boyfriend gave me a car and we haven't changed the title to my name. If I total the car, will I get the settlement? I am not the owner of my insured vehicle and there's no lien.

The claims payout would go to the vehicle owner. Insurance companies will not pay a different party without permission.

Your insurance may not have noticed that the car is owned by someone else but most have rules that require that the owner is on the policy. Your insurer could potentially cancel the policy if they discover this information. I would get him listed on the policy, if possible.
