Will my FICO points drop when I get a quote for car insurance?

I’m shopping for a better plan as my homeowners and auto policies are due to renew shortly. I’m concerned that getting (accurate) quotes will lower my credit score. When insurance companies run my report, will it affect my credit score, and for how long?

Fortunately, most insurance companies use only use "soft inquiries" and do not look at a full credit report. There is a statistical correlation between your credit score and how likely you are to file a claim. Credit only comes into account with "hard inquiries", which happen when applying for loans. However, there are a few companies that do not use credit as a rating factor. We have a short article here about credit and insurance, but they are hard to find. You can run these insurance quotes with no damage to your credit.
