Question

We will be purchasing our first car shortly before moving from WI to CA. How should we navigate car insurance?

My fiancee and I have just graduated from college and will be moving to Palo Alto, CA. She will be starting a new job and I will be attending graduate school. We plan on buying our first car (probably a new car) about 2 weeks before we leave and driving it out to CA. How should we manage our car insurance for this move?

Every state has separate laws, insurance plans, and registrations, but you shouldn't have an issue buying a vehicle in one state and moving to another state. If at all possible, I would wait and buy the vehicle in California — this way, you would only pay all the fees once. If you do buy the car in Wisconsin, you'd need to register it and get insurance there, then do it all over again once you're in California. Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a short-term insurance policy that will cover you just for those two weeks in Wisconsin, so you'll have to get insurance and cancel it after your road trip — then shop for a new policy in California. The Zebra can help you shop for rates while you're in Wisconsin, and also after you move to California. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. Below is some information you might find useful.
