Choosing an auto insurance company can be tricky: companies' rates differ by driving history, location, and age, and every company's discounts vary. Farmers and Mercury are two of the nation's top insurance companies, providing affordable insurance policies across large portions of the US.
To help simplify the process of comparing insurance companies, we've gathered average rates from Mercury and Farmers. The below rates cover myriad rating factors, including credit rating, driving history, and age. Compare rates and find an affordable policy today.
If you have extremely bad credit, Mercury could be the best option for you. On average, Mercury offers lower prices than Farmers for prospective clients with credit scores of lower than 580. Drivers with exceptional credit — a score of 800-plus — should opt for Farmers, which typically beats Mercury by $13 per year. View common insurance rates by credit level for Mercury and Farmers below.
As Mercury does much of its business in California, the company's rates don't have too much variability based on credit score. California is one of the few US states that restricts insurance companies' use of credit as a way to assign premiums.
|Credit score||Farmers avg. annual premium||Mercury avg. annual premium|
|Very Poor (300-579)||$2,633||$1,367|
|Very Good (740-799)||$1,459||$1,367|
If you are saddled with an at-fault crash, speeding ticket, reckless driving citation, or DUI on your driving résumé, Mercury could be a better choice than Farmers. Every insurance company enacts rate penalties differently, so always do your due diligence and compare quotes to understand which insurance company suits you.
|Violation||Farmers avg. annual premium||Mercury avg. annual premium|
|At-fault accident (damage < $1,000)||$2,334||$1,822|
|At-fault accident (damage > $1,000)||$1,699||$1,125|
Insurance companies rely on age to outline risk potential, assigning rates accordingly. An insurance policy is often most expensive for teen drivers — due to their increased odds of being involved in an accident — and most affordable for drivers aged 25 or older. Because every car insurance company prices ages uniquely, it's a smart move to shop around.
As a general rule, teen drivers should choose Mercury instead of Farmers: the former's average annual rates are $3,101 less than the latter's..

Aside from affordability, there are myriad pros and cons of both Farmers and Mercury, including their discounts, perks, customer satisfaction ratings, and financial stability. Be sure to weigh these elements before deciding.

|Recent Questions||Are some insurance providers better suited to my needs than others to get the best rate?|
Because most coverage options can be matched across insurance companies, I think what you are really looking for is the best customer service/claims support for the best cost. Right off the bat, I know Geico probably wouldn't be an option for you with a leased vehicle.Does Farmers allow exclusions?
While I do not work for Farmers, it has been my experience that they do allow exclusions. Usually, you will need to call your agent or a customer service representation at their call sent and request an exclusion form.Will my farmers insurance cover my towing off the the NJ turnpike
Although I am not a Farmers insurance agent, my understanding of Farmer's Roadside Assistance program is you can either call their roadside service while your vehicle is inoperable and they will tow you up to $150 or you can be reimbursed for your troubles. However, this is all dependent on having towing and roadside on your policy.Will insurance cover someone other than the insured?
While it can vary by company, insurance will follow the car rather than the driver. So, in the event you get into an accident in your dad's vehicle, his insurance would be primary and yours would be secondary.See More Questions
|Can I use my roadside assistance if I'm in my friends car?|
When you have roadside assistance through your insurance company, the service is only available on the vehicle that the coverage is listed. There are other roadside companies that will allow you to use the roadside no matter whose vehicle you are in.What do I do if my vehicle was totaled while parked?
I would definitely involve your insurance company and let them know about the situation. The other driver's insurance company should be paying for your damage up to the limit of that policy, but if it doesn't cover everything then your current company should be able to help cover the rest.Do I need a police report to file a claim?
Accidents that occur on private property do not require a police report in order to file a claim. Your familiarity with the other driver does not impact your ability to file a claim, however the fact that he is uninsured means that you will have to pay your deductible for the repairs.Do I contact the other driver's insurance company if they hit me while at the gas station?
If the other party hit your vehicle, and it's pretty clearly they're at fault, then you should contact their insurance for repairs. Parking lot accidents or accidents that occur on private property can be difficult to determine fault, but it sounds like the incident is pretty straight forward.See More Questions
