3 Rating from The Zebra

Founded in 2016, Say Insurance is a relatively new carrier, offering the standard suite of coverages and discount opportunities. Say Insurance stands out from other carriers by offering policyholders valuable information on their insurance profiles in the form of an insurance score. An insurance score is a number insurance companies use to determine the risk they might take by accepting you as a policyholder. Based on your driving history, vehicle type, location, credit score and claims history, insurance scores explain why your premium is a certain amount. Insurance carriers do not typically provide this information to policyholders; Say Insurance helps customers understand their score and gives guidance on ways to improve it and lower their rate.

How to make policy changes with Say Insurance

Making changes to your Say Insurance coverage can be done online or over the phone with a customer service representative. If you want to cancel your policy, you must do so by calling in. Say Insurance does not provide a way for customers to cancel online.

Say is planning on releasing a mobile app in late 2021 and offering a telematics coverage option in 2022.

Say insurance auto insurance discounts

Say Insurance offers an array of common discounts found at many insurance providers.

Based on driver or vehicle:

  • Anti-theft: Vehicles equipped with anti-theft devices may qualify for this discount.
  • Defensive driving: Customers who have taken a defensive driving course can earn lower premiums with this discount.
  • Multiple vehicles: Insuring more than one vehicle with Say earns drivers a multi-vehicle discount.

Based on the policy:

  • Advanced purchase: If the policy’s start date is at least seven days out from the purchase day.
  • Continuous insurance: Applicants without gaps in their insurance history can lower their rates.
  • Paperless: Going green means savings at Say Insurance.
  • Pay-in-full: Drivers get this discount by paying in one lump sum for the entire policy period.
  • Accident forgiveness: Say Insurance doesn't raise premiums for accidents resulting in damages of less than $1,000.

Auto insurance is Say's sole insurance product. Policyholders with other insurance needs must seek coverage elsewhere.

Is Say Insurance right for you?

Say's primary limiting factor is its geographic availability, as the company only sells insurance policies in six states, as of 2021.

Those drivers in a state serviced by Say may benefit from the company's transparent rating process, which sets the company apart and may win over customers new to solo insurance policies. Say Insurance is in the process of catering to this younger, more tech-savvy audience through its soon-to-be-released mobile app and telematics program.

For first-time insureds with very basic coverage needs, Say Insurance will check many of your boxes. More established insurance customers may find equal or better protection and a larger array of products with another company.
