Mercury or Safe Auto:
Which Company is Best for You?

Choosing an auto insurance company can be complicated: rates vary based on your driving history, age, and location, and every company provides a different set of discounts. Mercury and Safe Auto are among the nation's most popular insurers, providing competitively priced insurance policies across large portions of America.

In an effort to simplify the process of comparing insurance companies, we gathered average rates from Safe Auto and Mercury. These take into account a variety of rating factors, including credit rating, driving history, and age. Take a look at these rates and find the perfect policy for you.

Mercury vs. Safe Auto: premium comparison

Mercury vs. Safe Auto: pricing by credit score

If you have very poor credit, Mercury could be the best option for you. On average, Mercury offers more affordable rates than Safe Auto for drivers with credit scores of 579 or less. Insurance shoppers with exceptional credit — a score of 800 or better — should consider Mercury, which typically beats Safe Auto by $554 per year. Check out typical insurance rates by credit score for Safe Auto and Mercury:

Since Mercury does much of its business in California, the carrier's rates don't change much depending on a client's credit score. California is one of the few US states that does not allow insurance companies to rely on credit as a component of insurance pricing.

Very Good (740-799)$1,367$1,937
Exceptional (800-850)$1,367$1,921

Mercury vs. Safe Auto: high-risk insurance rates

If you are dealing with an at-fault accident, speeding violation, reckless driving violation, or DUI in your rear view mirror, Mercury could be a better choice than Safe Auto. Each insurance company prices its policies differently, so always do your due diligence and compare quotes to understand which insurer is best for you.

RATES BY CITATION: SAFE AUTO VS. MERCURY
InfractionMercury avg. annual premiumSafe Auto avg. annual premium
At-fault accident (damage < $1,000)$1,822$2,867

DUI/DWI$1,882$2,867
Reckless driving$1,882$2,867
Speeding ticket$1,457$2,738

Mercury vs. Safe Auto: rates by age bracket

Car insurance companies rely on a driver's age to estimate risk, pricing premiums accordingly. Insurance is typically priciest for teen drivers — due to their increased odds of being involved in an accident — and more affordable for older drivers. Since each insurance company rates age tiers uniquely, it's wise to compare rates and find a suitable policy.

As a general rule, teen drivers should choose Mercury over Safe Auto: Mercury offers average yearly savings of $4,845, compared to Safe Auto.

Cost aside, Mercury and Safe Auto each carry pros and cons, including discount programs, customer satisfaction ratings, add-ons, and financial stability. Dive into the data before making your decision.

Roadside AssistanceMercury offers roadside assistance as an optional addition to your policy which provides coverage 24/7 for things like reimbursement for locking keys in your car, a flat tire change, and even a tow up to the limit on your policy.Safe Auto's roadside assistance coverage pays for towing services and certain repair costs required to make your car operable.
Additional DiscountsMercury insurance offers additional accommodations to military service members like accepting out of state licenses, physical damage only coverage, and more!Safe Auto specializes in providing minimum, state required coverage and full coverage to drivers who have had some trouble getting affordable rates due to tickets, accidents, and license issues.
Recent QuestionsCan I use my roadside assistance if I'm in my friends car?
When you have roadside assistance through your insurance company, the service is only available on the vehicle that the coverage is listed. There are other roadside companies that will allow you to use the roadside no matter whose vehicle you are in.
What do I do if my vehicle was totaled while parked?
I would definitely involve your insurance company and let them know about the situation. The other driver's insurance company should be paying for your damage up to the limit of that policy, but if it doesn't cover everything then your current company should be able to help cover the rest.
Do I need a police report to file a claim?
Accidents that occur on private property do not require a police report in order to file a claim. Your familiarity with the other driver does not impact your ability to file a claim, however the fact that he is uninsured means that you will have to pay your deductible for the repairs.
Do I contact the other driver's insurance company if they hit me while at the gas station?
If the other party hit your vehicle, and it's pretty clearly they're at fault, then you should contact their insurance for repairs. Parking lot accidents or accidents that occur on private property can be difficult to determine fault, but it sounds like the incident is pretty straight forward.
See More Questions
Should I get full coverage from a less well-known insurer?
Whether or not the company is a "mainstream" provider doesn't mean that you would have a bad claims experience. There are several companies out there that have been around for several years and just don't advertise like other companies.
Who is at-fault when parking spot stopper had bolts sticking out of it?
Unfortunately you would be considered at fault for the damage to your vehicle. If you file a claim, it will likely be paid under collision coverage, meaning you'll be required to pay your deductible.
If my daughter is uninsured and gets rear-ended by another driver, will their insurance cover her damage?
In most instances of rear-end accidents, the driver who was hit is normally considered to be not at fault so I'd recommend that your daughter contact the insurance company of the other driver to start the claims process. In Texas, your insurance status (or lack thereof) should not keep you from being compensated if you are hit by an at-fault driver.
Do car insurance companies share information?
The new insurance company is likely to find out about the accident, but that will come from your driving reports when you buy your policy. The majority of insurance companies request a motor vehicle report (MVR) and a comprehensive loss underwriting exchange (CLUE) report to verify the accuracy of a new customer's driving record.
