Deciding on a car insurance company can be hard: companies' rates differ by driving record, location, and age, and every company provides a different set of discounts. Mercury and SAFECO are two of the most popular insurance companies, offering competitively priced policies in most US states.
In an effort to take the sting out of shopping for car insurance, we gathered average policy prices from SAFECO and Mercury. The below rates cover a number of rating factors, including credit rating, driving record, and age. Take a look at these rates and find your next car insurance policy today.
If you have very poor credit, Mercury could be the way to go. On average, Mercury offers more affordable premiums than SAFECO for drivers with credit scores of 579 or less. Those with exceptional credit — a score of 800 or higher — should consider Mercury, which typically beats SAFECO by $540 per year. View common insurance rates by credit tier for SAFECO and Mercury:
|Credit level||Mercury avg. annual premium||SAFECO avg. annual premium|
|Very Poor (300-579)||$1,115||$5,308|
|Very Good (740-799)||$1,115||$1,871|
If you're saddled with an at-fault crash, speeding ticket, reckless driving violation, or DWI on your record, Mercury could be a better choice than SAFECO. Every insurer has different post-violation pricing structures, so always do your due diligence and compare quotes to figure out which insurer suits you.
|Violation||Mercury avg. annual premium||SAFECO avg. annual premium|
|At-fault accident (damage < $1,000)||$1,822||$2,546|
|At-fault accident (damage > $1,000)||$1,125||$1,969|
Insurance companies use age to outline risk potential, assigning rates accordingly. An auto insurance policy is often most expensive for beginning and young drivers — due to their increased odds of being involved in an accident — and relatively affordable for middle-aged drivers. Because each insurance company rates age brackets uniquely, it's worth doing some comparison shopping.
As a general rule, teen drivers should choose Mercury before SAFECO: Mercury offers average yearly savings of $4,348, compared to SAFECO.
|Age tier||Mercury avg. annual premium||SAFECO avg. annual premium|
Cost aside, Mercury and SAFECO come with pros and cons, including discount programs, customer satisfaction ratings, add-ons, and financial stability. Dive into the data before making your decision.
