I love my career in insurance, but to others, my enthusiasm might seem out of place. When asked what I do for work, I’m thrilled to say that I’m an insurance sales agent at an industry-leading insurtech company.

Polite nods usually follow.

Insurance isn’t a hot topic at networking or recruitment events. The notion is that we spend our days pushing papers and staring at computer screens. Fortunately, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

Becoming a licensed insurance agent is a fulfilling and stable job with few barriers to entry. This can be hugely valuable at a time when many Americans are re-evaluating ways to save money and increase their incomes — looking for something more than getting by. I’m here to tell you that you can start a meaningful, professional career without an expensive college degree.

Here are 8 reasons why you should consider becoming a licensed insurance agent at The Zebra:

1. Get licensed on us

The Zebra just welcomed our first class of soon-to-be insurance agents to our new licensing program. We provide all necessary training and support to ensure you pass the state Property and Casualty (P&C) exam. We will help you succeed in becoming a licensed insurance agent on our dime, not yours. How cool is that?

2. Balance your work and life with tons of perks

The flexible, collaborative team dynamic differentiates insurance sales at The Zebra from others in our industry. There are so many benefits that come along with being a part of our agency:

  • Paid holidays/double-time opportunities
  • 37-hour workweeks (Paid for 40 hours)Lots of Vacay.png
  • Flexible PTO
  • Plenty of overtime opportunities
  • Shift swaps & slides
  • Casual attire
  • Learning & development stipends
  • Wellness perk ($100/month) + Free mental health perk
  • Pet adoption reimbursement ($300/year)
  • Paid parental leave program. Parents of a newborn or adopted child receive 20 weeks paid leave plus $5,000 "baby cash."
  • 401k with match
  • Bi-monthly catered lunch
  • Monthly curated snack box sent to your home
  • Health, dental, vision and disability coverage

The well-being of The Zebra employees is always at the forefront of decisions made at our company.

3. Get a leg up from the latest tech with a human touch

The Zebra is committed to making the insurance shopping experience quicker, smoother and more transparent not only for the customer, but also for our insurance agents. As a Zebra insurance advisor, you will be answering all inbound leads with high intent to buy. With our unique quote-to-bind tool, our customers have already entered their information and seen comparison rates from our wide range of carriers. The majority of the time, they are ready to purchase with the help of a licensed insurance advisor. Talk about an easy sell!

As an insurtech company, we are constantly investing in technology to make the sales process as painless as possible for the agent and consumer alike. One of The Zebra’s greatest tools is our ability to harness our tech with the human touch of our agents to find the coverage that works best for those that call into the agency. It's rare that our agents can’t find the best rate for the customer’s insurance needs (and they even occasionally find something that our website can’t).

4. Belong to a team

The Zebra makes a real effort to cultivate a fun work environment through virtual and in-person events. Happy hours, virtual bingo, movie nights, you name it! Though most of us are remote right now, our team huddles and weekly manager one-on-ones never slowed down. We operate in a culture of feedback, collaboration and celebration.

Our company motto is “All Stripes Welcome,” meaning support and inclusion for employees from all backgrounds and stages of life. As a member of our herd, you have the opportunity to join any of our employee resources groups (ERGs) that allow employees to informally network, volunteer and support each other.

5. Gain job stability in insurtech

The Zebra agency has come a long way since the early days of having a limited carrier lineup that only catered to the auto insurance needs of high-risk customers. With all the hard work our team has put in over the years, we now offer a vast range of insurance products across home and auto. Most of the nation's top insurance providers have seen the value of partnering with The Zebra. We are now an authorized agent for well-known carriers including Liberty Mutual, Progressive, Allstate, Travelers and Nationwide.

The Zebra agency has also expanded internally. We now have a Quality Assurance team to ensure all our policies are bound within the proper underwriting guidelines.agent standing.png

We added Support Advocates that are always on standby to help you with any questions you may have while working with your customers. And we’re currently recruiting agents to join our Customer Success and Customer Services teams.

6. Get growing

There are many ways to advance your career with The Zebra. Love being on the phones and working with customers? You can move from our Auto Standard team to our Multi-Line Team whose primary focus is selling auto and home insurance and other complex insurance lines like flood, earthquake, umbrella policies, etc.

Is a career in management calling your name? The majority of our managers all started as agents! We encourage career development and want to promote from within as much as possible. Our Trainers, Operations Managers, Quality Assurance team and Support Advocates all started as agents.

There are also opportunities outside of the agency. The Zebra’s Senior Integration Manager, Director of Account Management, Integration Manager, Senior Account Manager, Integrations Support Specialist, Associate SEO Content Strategist, Associate UX Researcher and Business Development Manager all started as… you guessed it, agents! There are programs to help you develop your leadership skills and get growing into a purposeful career that best suits you.

7. Get paid for what you earn

Want to work somewhere where your performance leads directly to extra cash in your pocket? Then The Zebra is the place for you. With a monthly commission structure, our agents earn money on every policy they write, whether it’s a renters policy, motorcycle policy, home or car insurance. You are incentivized based on how you do against your peers or team average. Plus, The Zebra’s high volume traffic gives you the ability to make those commission checks all year round.

8. Make a difference

Saving people money on their insurance is rewarding. We’re helping ensure our customers are fully protected in the event of an accident. Last week, I saved a family over $100 a month on their car and home insurance. Hearing the customer scream on the phone out of enthusiasm about the savings our services provided was the best part of my day. I can sleep well at night knowing I helped protect their future by selling them the right coverage for their needs.

So, are you ready to join the herd? All you need to start an amazing career is the drive to succeed. Get trained, get paid and enjoy the many perks that come with being a licensed insurance agent at The Zebra.
