At-fault wants to pay for damage he caused out of pocket

A car hit me and they accept fault. They are willing to pay out of pocket for everything but I do not trust him. I do not know him. Should I accept his offer? Also, how long do I have to decide?

This can be a tricky situation. Usually, someone will try to avoid insurance companies for two reasons: they either don't have any insurance or they want to avoid their rates going up. If the damage is small, this is generally encouraged. You can simply go to a mechanic you trust and get the estimate for the damage and have a check made out to you. Keep in contact with the at-fault driver in case anything else comes up and you need additional funds. However, you are under no obligation to do this. If you don't trust the other driver, get their car insurance information and contact their company and begin the claims process. If you decide on the latter, be sure to check out our claims calculator which can help you decide whether or not to file a claim.

Hitting an animal in the road falls under the category of a comprehensive insurance claim because animals do not follow road laws and can't be expected to avoid cars or roadways. It's the same general principle as hail damage. The incident changes to an at fault accident when you swerve t…

Can a married couple have separate car insurance policies?

Yes, you can have two separate policies. This can have its benefits in some cases. However, you will still need to be listed on each other's policies as household members/spouses but you can be excluded. Being excluded means you would not be covered under the policy at all. With that being sai…

Am I at fault if I swerve to avoid my neighbor's cat but hit his car?

Should I register my vehicle in the state I attend college in?

It depends. Obviously, you want to get the insurance in the state that the car is registered in. If the college student is not listed on their parent's policy, you would need to register the car in the state that you live in for most of the year. If they are listed on their parent's polic…
