Question

Do I qualify for USAA if my brothers are active military members?

I have two brothers (insured by USAA) currently active in the Navy and Marines. My age stands between them; I am a 23-year-old male. I'd love to join USAA for my auto insurance because they've had great experiences with the company. But they aren't sure if I qualify, so can you help me find out?

USAA membership isn’t extended to siblings

USAA (United Services Automobile Association) offers some of the most competitive insurance products on the market, but membership is limited to a specific group of people. If you're considering USAA for car, home, or life insurance, it's important to understand who qualifies for coverage. In your situation, as a brother to a USAA member, you do not qualify for insurance through USAA.

USAA primarily serves current and former members of the U.S. military. This includes:

In addition to those currently serving or who have served, USAA membership is also open to officer candidates in commissioning programs and students enrolled at U.S. service academies or in eligible ROTC programs.

Eligibility Through Family:

Even if you haven’t served in the military yourself, you may still be eligible for USAA insurance if you have a direct family connection to someone who has.

  • Spouses of USAA members who joined through their own military service are eligible for membership.
  • Children of USAA members (biological, adopted, or stepchildren) are also eligible to join, provided the parent was a USAA member first.

This generational eligibility can be a key path for civilians to access USAA’s insurance offerings, but it only extends to direct relationships.

Who Is Not Eligible?

  • Grandchildren, siblings, and other extended relatives of USAA members are not eligible unless they are direct dependents.
  • Former spouses lose eligibility unless they were members during the marriage and maintained continuous coverage afterward.
  • Civilian contractors or federal employees who work with the military are not eligible unless they meet the criteria above.

USAA membership is required to purchase insurance, banking, and investment products. While anyone can visit the website or get basic information, only eligible members can get quotes, apply for coverage, or access member benefits. If you can't qualify for USAA coverage, your best bet is to compare quotes from multiple companies to find cheap coverage that meets your needs.

If my daughter caused less than $1,000 in damage to another car, should we still file a claim or pay out of pocket?

I would agree with your assumption. In Kentucky, an at-fault accident impacts rates by an average of $917 per year in 2016. Since the accident will impact her rate for 3 years, that's quite a bit more than the cost of the repair. I would recommend paying for the other driver's damage out of pocket …
