Question

Is Hanover good for new drivers?

I just got my own car policy for the first time, and Hanover’s quote came in way higher than some of the other companies I checked. Why is that? Are they just more expensive, or am I missing something?

Hanover’s rates do tend to run higher than average, and that can feel like a shock if you’re shopping around for the first time. If cheap coverage is your sole focus, Hanover may not be the best deal for you at this point. There are a couple of reasons behind rates you're seeing:

  • Coverage style: Hanover leans toward policies with more built-in protection, and many of their plans include extras that other companies might only offer as add-ons.
  • Market focus: They’re not a “discount” or mass-market insurer — Hanover often appeals to people who want things like original parts for repairs, new car replacement, or broader liability coverage. That means their base rates can look higher even before you start adding options.
  • Michigan specifics: Insurance in Michigan is already among the most expensive in the country because of the state’s no-fault system. Hanover participates in that market, but they don’t always compete at the very bottom of the price range, especially for newer or younger drivers.

The good news is, rates won’t stay this high forever. As you build up a clean driving record, avoid tickets, and keep continuous insurance, your premiums will usually drop — sometimes quite a bit within just a few years.

So no, you’re not missing anything — Hanover just positions itself differently. If you’re mainly focused on price, it’s smart to compare quotes from a few different companies so you can see where Hanover fits in and decide if the extras are worth it.
