Question

Are the home discounts as good as auto?

I’ve had my auto policy with Auto-Owners for years and the discounts have been great. If I move my homeowners policy there too, are the savings usually just as good?

If you’ve had good luck with Auto-Owners for your car insurance, it’s reasonable to wonder whether the homeowners discounts are just as strong. The short answer is: they can be good, but they’re usually not dramatically bigger than what other insurers offer.

Auto-Owners does offer a multi-policy discount when you insure your home and auto with them. That’s one of the most common ways homeowners save money, and it’s a standard feature with the company. On average, bundling home and auto results in about a 10% discount on the combined premiums, although the exact amount depends on your state, property details, and coverage choices.

That’s a solid discount, but it’s important to keep expectations realistic. In the insurance industry, bundle discounts typically range from about 10% to 20%, and different companies land in different spots within that range. Some carriers may offer slightly larger bundle discounts, but their base rates can also be higher.

The bigger advantage with Auto-Owners often isn’t just the discount. Many customers stay with the company because of:

  • Strong financial ratings and stability
  • Low complaint levels compared with similar insurers
  • A wide range of optional coverages and endorsements

So if you’re already happy with their auto coverage, adding homeowners insurance can make sense. You may get a decent discount and the convenience of managing both policies through the same agent.

Still, it’s smart to compare a couple of quotes before making the switch. Sometimes the bundle is the best deal, but other times buying home insurance from a different carrier can still come out cheaper. Our knowledgeable agents here at The Zebra can help you out with this, too, whenever you're ready to compare.
