Questions about The Zebra business model and agency and how we work. 

No, we're an insurance comparison site and licensed agency. The big difference is that we compare the top insurance companies in one place to help you find the best policy for you. You can purchase a policy from an insurance company through us online or through one of our agents.

We make money in a couple ways. If you purchase a policy through one of our insurance agents, we earn a commission. When you choose to get a quote, we'll let your chosen insurance company know you're interested. Instead of a thank you card, they send a commission. These commissions allow us to provide our services free of charge to policy shoppers everywhere.

Each of our independent insurance agents is licensed to offer policies from every major provider. As your needs change, they'll always be there to help you find the coverage you need.

Using The Zebra to Find Policies

Troubleshooting using The Zebra search engine to find, compare, and buy your next insurance policy.

All it takes is five minutes. You answer some questions, and we'll crunch the numbers to show you quotes from every major insurance company. After you decide on a policy, you can buy online or through one of our licensed insurance agents.

Our goal at The Zebra is to simplify insurance and provide everyone a range of affordable quotes. Unfortunately, sometimes we're unable to for a variety of reasons:

1) Where you live can have a big impact on the types of quotes you are offered. Certain states and geographies are harder to insure than others because of extreme weather concerns and government regulations.

2) It also could be something in your driver profile that is setting off alarms for insurers, such as a particularly risky vehicle (some insurers have dropped Kia's due to theft issues for example), past violations or claims, or your credit score, among other factors.

3) It's possibly a combination of the above. We might not have a carrier in your state that fits the criteria you need and is willing to offer you insurance.

If you don't see any quotes after using The Zebra, don't give up. Try calling our agents so they can help explain what the reason might be and see if they can troubleshoot to find you a good rate.

When you enter your information, we comb through hundreds of insurance companies to find the best fits for you. In your results, we try to show you the best options with companies for which you are qualified.

If there are particular companies you were hoping to be insured by that didn't show up on your results page, give our agents a call. We can do a manual quote to see if you're qualified or see what other options there are for quotes that might work for you.

We work with a wide variety of insurance providers. If your preferred provider didn't show up for you, give our agents a call. We can run a quote manually to see if you're qualified. If your preferred carrier isn't able to write a policy for you at this time, we can also look into why that is and give you some answers. If you tell our agents what you liked most about your experience with that insurance company, they can also provide recommendations for similar providers that might suit your needs.

Finally, if you are already currently covered by your preferred provider, try renewing directly with them. You can still use the rates we provided for comparison and to decide if you might prefer to save money by switching providers.

It's your call. If you want to purchase a policy directly through your provider, they'll have your quote ready. Or you could skip the trip to another site and buy a policy through The Zebra. No matter which you choose, it's the same policy.

The quotes we provide are based on the information you enter, so before we can lock in those rates, some of the details have to be confirmed.

Some carriers will have you go through their website to finalize your quote or you can call our agents to finalize your policy. In either case, here's what you can expect:

1) You will likely have to confirm your answers to some of the info you have provided.

2) The insurance company will run a soft credit inquiry (if you live in a state where credit is a rating factor), motor vehicle report, and CLUE report to verify details.

3) The insurance company will also run a report to look for additional drivers in the household. You will need to exclude any drivers living in the house you don't want covered (although keep in mind that you should only do that if they won't be driving your cars at all).

Once all these reports come back and all the information is verified, your rate is finalized and you can officially buy your new policy.

You should be able to get preliminary rates with your credit still frozen. However, in order to run all of the reports (credit, claims history, violation history, etc.) and finalize your auto insurance rates, many carriers will require a credit check which would require you to unfreeze your credit.

We will never disclose your phone number to third parties, nor will we contact you by phone unless you initiate a phone exchange with us.

Using The Zebra Wallet

Questions about accessing and using the features of your account with The Zebra.

If you’ve used The Zebra before to shop for rates or purchase a policy, navigate to the top of the screen where you’ll see a login button. You can also access the log-in screen directly here. You will be prompted to enter your email. 

Once you enter the email you used previously when you provided your information to The Zebra, you will receive a link to your email. Clicking this link will take you to your wallet dashboard. 

On the dashboard, you will see all your active policies. You can also easily re-shop and refresh your quotes. You can also talk to an agent if you have any questions or set a reminder to shop later. 

You don’t need a password for your account to access the wallet! By using the email you used when you initially entered your information into The Zebra, you'll be directed to your email for a link to log-in.

You can request changes and updates if needed. Clicking the link under the policy to request changes will display the phone number you need. Depending on your policy, the phone number may be for The Zebra agency or it may send you directly to the insurance company that carries the policy.  

One of the most exciting features is automatic re-shopping. For many current customers whose policies are ready for renewal, we will automatically shop for you. When you log-in to the Zebra Wallet, you can see the best coverage option we found for you — automatically. We can tell you both how much your insurance rate will be going up on renewal, and if you could save money by switching to another insurance company.

Note: If you don't see automatic re-shop options available in your Zebra Wallet account, you can still reach out to our agents to see what options are available to you. 

If you navigate to the section of the dashboard in the left navigation marked “Quotes,” it will take you to the most up to date quotes available for you. You can then click through those links to make a final purchase. Alternatively, you can click the “Speak to a Licensed Agent” button to be connected to one of The Zebra’s insurance agent who can go through your best options.

You can find links to “Request changes” beneath each of your active policies. This will provide the phone number you need in order to make changes. That might be a number for The Zebra or for your insurance company.

One of the most exciting features in the Zebra Wallet is the ability to take shopping for insurance off your to-do list. While customers of The Zebra have always used our comparison engine to quickly shop and compare options from hundreds of insurance companies, now we're taking it a step further.

For many current customers whose policies are ready for renewal, we will automatically shop for you. When you log-in to the Zebra Wallet, you can see the best coverage option we found for you — automatically. We can tell you both how much your insurance rate will be going up on renewal, and if you could save money by switching to another insurance company.

Policy Maintenance and Updates

Questions on how to update or handle your policy once you have it. 

The first thing to do when you want to add a new vehicle to your policy is to locate the original policy document. This should have the contact info you need to make changes.

You can also log-in to view your policies in The Zebra Wallet. On your dashboard, you will see active policies with a link for how to make changes.

Alternatively, you can give one our agents a call. Just click the little phone icon in the right corner of the screen. If we service the policy in question, we can add the vehicle for you. If we don't service the policy, our agents will direct you to your insurance company.

You can also log-in to view your policies in The Zebra Wallet. On your dashboard, you will see active policies with a link for how to make changes.

This depends on your policy. In some cases, your insurance provider will have an online portal where you can submit payment. In other cases, The Zebra can process payments for you through your carrier's portal.

If paying by check, please send the check directly to your insurance carrier instead of through The Zebra. This helps ensure on-time payment.

You can usually cancel your policy at any time and for any reason by calling your insurance company or agent (not The Zebra). You can refer to your original policy document, which should have the contact info you need. You can also find this information on your initial email from your insurance company, ID cards, or declaration page.

If you don't have or can't find your policy documents, call our service line and we can help you out. If we service the policy, we can make changes for you or cancel the policy. However, if we don't service the policy, we can direct you to the right contact info for your insurance company.

Keep in mind, you shouldn't cancel your policy until you have new coverage lined up. Lapses in coverage may make your insurance more expensive in the future, and open you up to liability during the lapse. When you switch to a new company, double-check that the cancellation date is the same day your coverage starts with your new insurer.
