Question

What should I do with my insurance if my car is repossessed?

My car was repossessed last week and my insurance bill is due in a few days. I'm not planning on getting my car back, but I will be buying a different vehicle in the next few weeks. Should I cancel my insurance until I get another car?

Since you no longer have possession of the vehicle then technically you could cancel your policy. It's important to keep in mind, though, that if you have been continuously insured for 6 months or more you will lose a discount if your policy cancels. If you were not planning on getting another vehicle for an extended period of time then it would make sense to cancel your policy since you would be paying for months of coverage for no reason. However, if you are planning on getting a different vehicle  in less than a month, your rate will be more expensive if you cancel rather than maintain your active policy. I would recommend paying your bill and updating the vehicle on your policy once you get a new one for the best savings on your car insurance.

How do I know if a company even covers my state?

That’s a really common question, especially when you’re new to insurance. Shelter is a good company, but they don’t currently write auto policies in Nevada — they focus more on states in the Midwest and South. Not every company is licensed to sell policies in every state. Larger carriers like Progr…

Does Root track me 24/7 and drain my battery?

Root does use your phone’s GPS and motion sensors, but it isn’t tracking you 24/7 the way people think. The app only records driving data when it detects a trip. If you’re walking your dog or riding a bus, it shouldn’t count that as driving (though it occasionally mislabels trips, which you can cor…

Will comprehensive insurance cover damages caused by road debris?

Sorry to hear about your accident. If you have comprehensive coverage, it should cover any damages caused by debris. However, just like collision coverage, it will usually have a deductible. I would suggest using our claims calculator to see if it's worth filing a claim or simply paying for the dam…
