Question

If I have car insurance, can I test drive a car that has no insurance?

I have car insurance and I want to buy another car from a private seller. The car I want to test drive is uninsured. Will my insurance cover me in an accident?

Yes, most companies in Alabama will cover you to drive another vehicle, especially just to test drive it. You can always call your specific insurance company to find out what their coverage entails. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Should I get insurance or car registration first?

In most states you are required to provide proof that your vehicle is insured before allowing you to register your vehicle. The insurance policy must meet the state's minimum coverage requirement to tag your vehicle so you will want to take your proof of coverage with you to verify your compliance with the law.

If my Alabama registration tags expire, do I still have to carry insurance?

Alabama requires that registered vehicles must also be insured. If your registration tags expire and you want to renew them then you must have active auto insurance before the new tags will be issued.
