MAPFRE Insurance: A good choice for standard drivers

MAPFRE is a middle-of-the-road auto insurance provider with some unique discount opportunities and helpful policy management tools. While pricing information is limited, the company makes day-to-day account access fairly easy. The Zebra gives MAPFRE auto a good rating.

However, customer feedback points to poor claims support and inconsistent service. For drivers in eligible states with straightforward coverage needs, MAPFRE could still be worth considering — especially if the price is right.

What customers like:
  • Ease of Filing a Claim: MAPFRE has multiple filing options make submitting claims simple and quick.

  • Service Hours and Accessibility: MAPFRE support is available when you need it, including evenings and weekends.

What customers don't like:
  • Communication During Claims Process: Poor communication from MAPFRE forces you to chase down claim updates.

  • Financial Strength Ratings: MAPFRE weak ratings raise concerns about the company's financial stability.

How The Zebra evaluates insurance companies

Rating Explanation Star rating equivalent
Subpar Lowest ranking, suggesting instability or high risk 0-1.9
Fair Somewhat stable but not consistently reliable 2-2.9
Good Generally dependable with moderate stability 3-3.9
Solid Strong, reliable and dependable with minor risks 4-4.4
Exceptional Highest rating, indicating outstanding stability and reliability 4.5-5

Methodology — how The Zebra reviews insurance companies

The team of insurance experts at The Zebra evaluates companies by focusing on customer experience first, with an emphasis on service quality, reliability, and ease of interaction. Unlike previous models, pricing is not scored but is instead presented separately as context for comparison.

Each category has been scored using a combination of our internal customer satisfaction survey results and published scores from reputable organizations such as AM Best and J.D. Power.

  • Service Accessibility & Support Quality (25%): This category measures how easy it is to get help when needed, evaluating factors such as support channel availability (phone, chat, in-person, app), response times, agent knowledge, service hours, and language accessibility.
  • Claims Experience (25%): This category assesses how smoothly the claims process works, considering ease of filing (online, app, or phone), transparency and communication, processing times, and fairness in dispute resolution.
  • Digital Experience & Policy Management (25%): This category evaluates the convenience of managing your policy: this includes mobile app usability, website experience, account management, digital document access, self-service options, and platform integrations
  • Trust & Reliability (25%): This category looks at a company’s overall reliability, measuring financial strength, market stability, regulatory history, communication transparency, and consistency in policy terms.

Price context: Pricing varies significantly based on individual circumstances and risk factors. Customers can evaluate cost-effectiveness based on their specific situation and the service quality scores provided.

How much is MAPFRE car insurance?

MAPFRE's customer service & claims experience: Some highs, some lows

MAPFRE's customer service has its ups and downs. Managing your policy or handling claims are easy and efficient through their digital platforms are some its higher score catagories. Unfortunately, dealing with disputes or complex claims can be more time-consuming.

Impossible to communicate…

"It’s almost impossible to communicate with them, as every time you send a message on their site they reply from a no-reply email. They set my policy up incorrectly and did not send me the paperwork for the automated renewal. I have found them really exasperating to deal with and they don’t accept responsibility for the errors they’ve made." - Trustpilot

DO NOT GET MAPFRE INSURANCE!

"My dad was a customer for 20 years when they refused to pay out for a stolen car. I borrowed his car to do a 4 hour drive because I didn't want to put miles on my car. Long story short the Hyundai was stolen over night. They accuse us of setting the car up to be stolen mind you this car has 200k miles 2011 sonata worth maybe $3,000. Took us through this 5 month court case investigation just to deny us the claim and then also they destroyed my car without asking us. DO NOT BUY THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO NOT PAY YOU!"
- Reddit

48 hour response for questions?

"I am a new customer and I sent a question in via e-mail on Saturday as your suggested form of communication, and I received an e-mail back indicating there would be a response within 48 hours... My previous insurance company had AI chat or I could chat with a live agent. I took care of 100% of my insurance inquiries and business using their chat... You don't have one to my knowledge? And a 48-hour response is not acceptable... especially when I contacted you all during your business hours!" - Trustpilot

Final thoughts: Is MAPFRE Right for You?

MAPFRE can be a solid choice for auto insurance if it’s available in your area and aligns with your coverage needs and budget. That said, the company has received below-average marks for customer satisfaction and complaint handling. Overall, it’s a middle-of-the-road insurer — capable of providing the basics, but not necessarily standout service.
