Question
Can I get insurance in one state if my vehicle is registered in one state and insured in another with The Zebra?
I've recently move from New York to Connecticut. My car is registered in New York, and the registration isn't set to expire for another three months. I know I have a three month grace period before I have to register my car in Connecticut, so I was just going to wait until that expires. However, I need to renew my insurance now. Can my car that's technically registered in New York, be insured in Connecticut?
Answer
Unfortunately, the short answer is no. Depending on the state's Department of Insurance, have between 30 and 90 days to transfer your car's registration and insurance to your new state. In Connecticut, you do have 90 days, but for the benefit of others with the same question from other states: look it up for your new home state. In many states, you only have 30 days.
If you extend beyond that grace period after taking up residency in your new state, you risk any claims being denied and your coverage potentially being cancelled.
