Question

If my girlfriend is moving in with me, should we get separate renters insurance policies?

My girlfriend and I are moving in together and we plan on splitting all of our bills. Does it make sense for us to share a renters policy or should we each have our own?

Here is a good article on sharing renters insurance with a roommate. In my personal opinion, sharing a policy with any person who isn't a spouse is not a good idea. The amount of coverage on the policy is split in half and any claim made by the other party will also be attached to your insurance record. There is also the issue of separating the policy if you two happen to part ways. Renters insurance is generally inexpensive so you wouldn't be saving a lot of money by combining your policy, and the potential headaches that could arise should anything happen between you and your girlfriend are reason enough to keep it separate.

Can I sue if a ceiling collapsed on me after repairs?

First off, I'm sorry to hear that happened and I hope your brother is okay. In that situation, you would want to seek legal advice given there are several variables at play. The fault might be shared by both the landlord and the repair company but an insurance adjuster would be the one to dete…

Can I add coverage after I've had an accident?

Unfortunately you cannot add collision coverage after an accident and then use that coverage for the accident; your coverage only becomes applicable for accidents that occur after you add the coverage - not before. The date of the accident is what they look at, not when you file the claim. At this …

Will my renters policy cover additional living expenses?

Since it is an issue with the dwelling, your landlord should have coverage for this type of issue on their policy. I would check wi…
