Question

If my girlfriend is moving in with me, should we get separate renters insurance policies?

My girlfriend and I are moving in together and we plan on splitting all of our bills. Does it make sense for us to share a renters policy or should we each have our own?

Here is a good article on sharing renters insurance with a roommate. In my personal opinion, sharing a policy with any person who isn't a spouse is not a good idea. The amount of coverage on the policy is split in half and any claim made by the other party will also be attached to your insurance record. There is also the issue of separating the policy if you two happen to part ways. Renters insurance is generally inexpensive so you wouldn't be saving a lot of money by combining your policy, and the potential headaches that could arise should anything happen between you and your girlfriend are reason enough to keep it separate.

Can I get a refund if I was double insured

This has more to do with company-specific guidelines. While some companies will prevent you from seeking full reimbursement for canceling a policy within 90 days, others will not if you can show proof of other insurance. In my experience, if you can show proof of another insurance, you might be abl…
