Question

Will The Hartford lower my rate if I'm not driving very much?

I'm 68 years old, retired, and just don’t drive much these days. Can The Hartford lower my rate if I only use my car for errands or doctor’s appointments? I don't drive long distances or after dark anymore at all, and if I need to go a long way, I ride with my kids. Thanks.

The short answer is yes — if you’re driving fewer miles, The Hartford may be able to adjust your rate. This is a really common question, especially for drivers whose routines have changed after retirement. Here are a few things worth asking about:

  • Low-mileage discounts: Many insurers, including The Hartford, consider mileage when setting premiums. Fewer miles usually means less risk, which can translate into savings.
  • Usage-based programs: The Hartford has a telematics program called TrueLane. It tracks how you drive (mileage, braking, time of day) and can reward safe, limited driving with a discount.
  • Coverage adjustments: If you own a second car or rarely drive one of your vehicles, you might not need the same level of coverage on it. Sometimes switching to a higher deductible or dropping certain coverages (if it makes sense) can lower costs too.

It’s a good idea to give your agent an accurate estimate of your current mileage — whether that’s under 5,000 miles a year or just a few hundred each month. That way, your policy reflects your actual driving habits, not how much you used to be on the road. Be sure to ask about other discounts you may qualify for, as well. There could be senior-specific savings waiting that you just don't know about yet!

If you've got more questions about your policy or want to shop around for options that may meet your current needs better, you can always reach out to our in-house agents.

Can I sue someone for the damage their driveway caused?

Although their driveway was what caused the damage, it is the driver's responsibility to navigate slowly over bumps to avoid damage. So, in this case, the owner of the driveway wouldn't be considered at fault or responsible for the damages. What I do recommend, however, is getting an estimate for t…
