Question

What are my options if I am paying over $700 a month in car insurance?

My girlfriend lives in New York City and has eight points on her license. She also has two claims on her leased car. Her previous insurance company dropped her and now she is being charged $750 a month by a new company. This is more than her car payment. The lease ends in September. What are her options?

Unfortunately, it would appear that your girlfriend's insurance company sees her as a high-risk driver. This would explain her coverage being dropped and the new policy having expensive rates. There are many factors that come into play when insurance companies determine rates. Your driving record is certainly one of them. There are a few options, however. First, you may want to shop around for a cheaper policy. There are non-standard auto insurance companies that specialize in high-risk drivers. The Zebra can quote you with several companies at once. You can also give us a call at 888-807-3823. Your other option is to simply try and get out of your lease contract early. If the leasing company allows this, you would likely incur a penalty. However, this could still be cheaper in the long run. For more information, check out the links below.

Your insurance should cover the damages minus your deductible. In this case, you would file a comprehensive claim for the damage. A comprehensive claim does not raise your rate as much as a collision would — about 4.35% for your first comp claim. As a warning, they may investigate and take extra ti…

How many years of driving history do insurance companies check?

Will GEICO increase my rates if I file a windshield claim?

This is a tricky question to answer. How a claim will impact your rate is specific to the coverage and company you have. In general, a windshield claim will affect your rate but not as much as a collision claim will. Companies consider the amount paid out on the claim when determining rate increase…
