Question
Will a hit and run impact my car insurance premium in CA?
My car was hit while parked, there is a scratch and dent. If I report it will it affect my policy and stay on my record for future claim? We have Geico, and I'm not sure if I want to report it or get it fixed
Answer
Yes, when your company has to pay out on a claim, it will impact your rates. If you file a police report and have uninsured motorist property damage coverage, this coverage will pay for the damages and will be considered a not-at-fault accident. Not-at-fault accidents will stay on your record for up to three years. If you do not have uninsured motorist coverage, then your collision coverage will pay for the damage, however, you will be responsible for your deductible and the accident will be listed as at-fault. At-fault accidents will stay on your record for up to five years. Check out our guide explaining what to expect and what to consider when filing a claim. Good luck and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
