Question

Does car insurance cover a locksmith?

I'm not sure where my keys might be, my car is locked, and I'm not able to get inside to check for them. I have roadside assistance on my car insurance policy. Will that cover me for this?

If you have roadside assistance on your insurance policy then it is extremely likely that your policy will cover a locksmith to unlock your vehicle. You might even be able to get your vehicle "re-keyed" under your roadside assistance coverage if you aren't able to find your keys. Not all roadside assistance and/or "towing and labor" coverage is created equal, however, and what is offered by one company can differ significantly with that of another company. You will want to contact your insurance company to inquire about the specifics of your roadside assistance coverage just to be sure. Best of luck!

Will my insurance have to pay more than the car is worth?

This can depend. In California, a car is deemed totaled if the cost of repairs plus the scrap value of the vehicle is greater or equal to the actual cash value of the vehicle. Meaning, if your insurance company agrees with the Kelley Blue Book value, it is likely your vehicle will be totaled. If yo…

I got in an accident the same day I reinstated my lapsed policy. Will it be covered?

It depends on how the policy was reinstated. If they reinstated with no lapse, then you are free to file a claim. If they reinstated with no lapse but had you sign what is called a No Loss letter — which dictates that no accidents had occurred before taking payment — then filing a claim would be co…
