Question

Does car damage affect your insurance rates?

I came back to my car after a hike to find someone had tried to break in through the door lock and damaged the outside handle. Does just having damage on my car cause my rates to go up? And if I ever need to add coverage or switch insurers, does existing damage on my car matter? Like would someone come do an inspection of my car or something like that?

Just having damage on your car does not cause your rates to go up. Insurance premiums are based on risk factors like your driving record, location, and coverage level, not the physical condition of your vehicle sitting in a parking lot.

Where existing damage might come into play is if you ever switch insurers or add physical damage coverage like comprehensive or collision. The core issue is straightforward: an insurer won't pay out for the same damage twice. If you file a claim, collect a payout, and never get the repair done, you can't turn around and file another claim for that same damage later. Pre-insurance inspections and photo documentation exist largely for this reason: to establish a clear record of what damage was already there before your policy began, so there's no dispute down the road.

Some states and/or companies formalize this process through a required inspection handled by a company called CARCO. It documents the vehicle's condition before coverage takes effect, and while California itself doesn't require an inspection, an insurance company can.

If you already have comprehensive and collision in place, the existing damage on your door handle is a non-issue from an insurance standpoint. If you're thinking about adding coverage or shopping for a new policy, just be upfront about any existing damage so there are no surprises if you ever need to file a claim.

If I have gap insurance and totaled my car, but there is no gap between insurance payment and remaining loan balance, do I get a refund?

Not all gap insurance is written in the same manner, so you may have to refer to your insurer to get more information. From my understanding, if you pay off the loan and didn't use gap insurance to do so, they will probably refund some premiums paid back to you. It doesn't hurt to call them up and …
