Question

Do parking tickets affect insurance rates?

I just moved to a new apartment in the city and have to park on the street since I haven't gotten a parking permit for my building yet. So far, I have gotten two parking tickets in the last week and am worried about my insurance company raising my car insurance rates.

A parking ticket or two won’t impact your insurance—especially if paid on time. However, accumulating multiple unpaid tickets over a few years can lead to consequences that may indirectly affect your rates.

Unlike moving violations, parking fines aren’t added to your driving record since they’re tied to the vehicle, not the driver. That means they won’t result in points on your license. However, if left unpaid, they can lead to registration suspension, fines, or credit score damage—factors that insurers may consider when determining risk.

Also, if someone else gets a parking ticket while driving your car, you’re responsible for paying it since it is registered in your name.

While a single parking ticket won’t impact your car insurance, failing to pay it can lead to bigger issues that might. Unpaid tickets can result in:

  • Suspended driver’s license – Some states suspend licenses for unpaid violations, which may require an SR-22 filing. This labels you as a high-risk driver, often leading to higher insurance rates.
  • Canceled policy – If your registration is revoked due to unpaid tickets, your insurance provider may cancel your policy, affecting your coverage options.
  • Late fees and credit impact – Unpaid fines can accumulate late fees and, if sent to collections, may lower your credit score. Since many insurers use credit scores to determine rates, this could indirectly raise your premiums.

Parking tickets are frustrating and costly, but they’re often avoidable with a little awareness. Always check for No Parking signs and be mindful of restricted areas like fire hydrants, crosswalks, and railroad tracks. Private lots like those at malls or hospitals may also have specific parking rules. Avoid overstaying at meters or parking illegally in high-traffic areas, as these non-moving violations can still lead to fines. When in doubt, paying for a legal spot is usually cheaper than risking a ticket. If parking is time-limited, set a reminder on your phone to avoid overstaying. A little attention can go a long way in saving you money and hassle.

If your friend was pulled over without insurance, they would be the one to receive the ticket. However, if they caused an accident, the other party may be able to come after you AND your friend for damages. This is because you are the owner of the car and required by law, as an owner, to have insur…

If I hit an object in the road, can I claim this under my comprehensive coverage?

Insurance companies consider hitting an object in the road to be an accident. Unfortunately, that means you will need to use your collision coverage, the incident will be considered your fault, and you'll likely see an increase in premium. I would recommend getting a few repair estimates first…
