Question

Why does Travelers keep telling me about IntelliDrive?

I just got a quote from Travelers and they keep pushing this IntelliDrive app at me. Supposedly it can save me money, but I’m not thrilled about my phone tracking when I hit the brakes or if I’m driving home late after or something. I just want someone to be honest about if this thing actually helps, or is it just another trick to bump up my premium if I don’t drive perfectly?

A lot of drivers feel the same way. Travelers IntelliDrive is their version of a usage-based insurance program. (which most companies offer these days). The app tracks things like your speed, braking, acceleration, and the time of day you’re on the road. If the app shows you’re a safe driver, it can cut your premium at renewal — in some states, by as much as 30%.

But here’s the flip side: if your habits look riskier (frequent hard braking, late-night driving, or heavy acceleration), your rate could actually go up in some states. That’s the part many people don’t love.

A few other things to keep in mind:

  • Discount up front: Travelers often gives you a small discount just for signing up, even before your full driving data is scored.
  • Trial run: Some drivers try it for a single term to see if they actually benefit before deciding if it’s worth sticking with.
  • Feedback: The app gives you a driving score and suggestions, which some folks find helpful for spotting habits that might be costing them money (or safety).

So yes, IntelliDrive can save you money — but it’s not automatic. If you’re mostly a cautious driver and don’t mind the tracking, it could work in your favor. If you know your habits (or schedule) are more unpredictable, the savings might not be worth the trade-off.
