Question

Can I pay my body shop out of pocket and get reimbursed later?

I lost control on an icy road and damaged the front of my car. It's been at the body shop for over a month, and the repairs are done, but my insurance company still hasn't paid the final invoice, so the car is just sitting there. Can I pay the rest of the balance out of pocket to get my car back and have the insurance company reimburse me later?

Yes, you can pay the remaining balance out of pocket to have your car released from the repair shop, and requesting reimbursement from your insurer afterward is likely an option for an ongoing claim. But, like so many things, payment on an auto claim depends on several things.

Here are a few scenarios that can affect how you might get the final payment(s):

  • If your car has a loan, the insurer may need to make the check out to both you and the lienholder, which can add steps and slow things down.
  • If your insurer has a preferred repair network, they may be more likely to pay that shop directly. If you chose your own shop, they may simply write you a check instead.
  • If you own the car outright, the process is generally simpler, but it still comes down to your specific carrier and policy.

It's worth calling your adjuster directly to ask how the final supplement payment will be issued and when to expect it. Sometimes a direct conversation moves things faster than waiting. You can also ask about rental reimbursement coverage if you've been without your car this whole time, since that coverage exists for situations exactly like this.

If you do decide to pay out of pocket, get everything in writing from the body shop first: the remaining balance, confirmation that payment will release the car, and their agreement to refund you if the insurer pays later. Your Pennsylvania state insurance department is also a resource if you feel the claim is being handled unreasonably slowly. I hope this helps, and that you're back on the road soon!
